THE TUNNEL

The Clem Jones Tunnel (CLEM7) is an exciting first for Brisbane. This 6.8-kilometre tollway – consisting of twin, 2-lane tunnels – links five major roads north and south of the Brisbane River.

Queensland tollway company, RiverCity Motorway Group, proudly operates the CLEM7. Tolls are collected using a fully electronic system that identifies motorists via an electronic tag fitted inside their vehicles or through number plate recognition technology.

The CLEM7 is also the first section of the city’s new M7 motorway, due to be completed in 2012 following the construction of the Airport Link tunnel. The M7 will provide a direct link from Woolloongabba to the airport and fast-growing northern suburbs.

Proudly honouring the memory of Clem Jones

Clem Jones was Brisbane’s longest serving Lord Mayor, holding office from 1961 to 1975. In that time, he oversaw its growth from sleepy country town to vibrant subtropical city.

A great advocate of progress, Clem Jones was responsible for Brisbane’s first town plan and established sewerage, water and road networks. He sealed roads, built new ones and developed city gardens, sporting fields and swimming pools.

Clem Jones passed away in 2007, aged 89. In recognition of his enormous contribution to making Brisbane the place it is today, it was decided to name the city’s biggest ever infrastructure project after him.
