SAFETY SYSTEMS
The CLEM7 is one of Australia’s safest tunnels. A range of safety features and systems operate in the tunnel to provide the safest driving environment possible.
Traffic management
The CLEM7 is fitted with hi-tech traffic management systems and devices, including:
- More than 250 cameras inside the tunnel to automatically detect and alert tunnel operators to any variations in normal traffic flow
- Variable speed and message signs and lane use signs to enable tunnel operators to advise and direct motorists should an incident occur
- Radio re-broadcast system to enable tunnel operators to broadcast messages over a vehicle’s AM or FM radio band
- Emergency barriers and stop signs at the tunnel entry points should the tunnel need to be closed at any stage
- The speed limit in the tunnel is generally 80km/h. Reduced speed limits will be applied when dealing with a breakdown, a collision or a delay on the exit ramps
Cross-passages
The CLEM7 consists of two parallel, or twin, tunnels that are approximately 10 metres apart. The two tunnels are connected by 41 cross-passages that are spaced every 120 metres along the entire length of the CLEM7.
If an incident occurs in one tunnel, car occupants may move away from the incident by progressing along the tunnel to the nearest cross-passage, sliding the door open to enter, walking through and exiting the passage into the other tunnel. Evacuees should follow any instructions provided over the PA system and check that traffic has been halted by the controller before exiting. They will be directed to walk or await transport out of the tunnel.
Each of the cross-passages features a white “running man” sign on painted green bckground, and is individually numbered and identified by directional signs.
Fire and safety equipment
Some of the key fire and life safety features that will be in operation 24 hours a day include:
- Heat detection system and alarm, that automatically links to the operators of the Tollway Control Centre and advises Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) that there is a fire incident
- Fire water system fixed to tunnel ceiling that has the capability to dump high volumes of water in the area of a fire if necessary
- Fire hydrants, hose reels and fire extinguishers which are located every 60 metres along the tunnel
- Motorist Emergency Telephones located every 120 metres inside the tunnel to provide direct contact with tunnel operators
